“LOOP CAGE“

....same genre, same BPM, same rhythms, same chords progressions…. seems like your brain is stuck in a loop and keeps going through the same motions over and over.

Singer songwriter Iris Yuvelir | Music blog Loop Cage about songwriter brain music creativity perspective when he or she is stuck in creativity block

To get out of it you need to break this loop out, here is how:

1. First of all try to switch up your routine approach to writing a song, I mean, if you used to start writing a song from the beat – now start with melody line; and vice a versa.

2. Secondly spend some time on learning a new genre of music. For instance, if you are a Latin Pop producer you may spend a week learning everything you can find about Funk. And what is of the key importance here - try writing a pure funk song, well, at least make an attempt to write a Funk song. Sounds too challenging, right? Yes it does, moreover it sounds thought-provoking. But you'll be surprised with what your brain is capable of!

3. And last but not the least, listen to music of completely different genres (as more as possible); the greater is the difference between your genre and the one you’re listening to the better. Feeding your brain with new musical information teaches your brain the nuances and tricks of a new genre thus widening up your creative perspectives. By following recommendations above you’ll never get stuck in a “loop cage” again. Just have a try.

Creativity drought

Lack of creativity? Let me guess…yoga exercises and stepping out of comfort zone are of little or no help any more? This means you are in creativity drought and looking for inspiration.

Know what is “tunnel vision”? When we get so focused on achieving a goal in music and seek for inspiration only in music while ignoring other arts, we acquire a “tunnel vision”. We see nothing but music. My recommendation: pick up a book or watch a movie with a mind blowing plot and complex characters, and/or discover what’s new in the world of Conceptual art. In other words open your mind and heart to new experiences and feelings. Try to understand what particularly inspires you and why. This will help you find your own remedy of getting out of your creativity drought. As a creator you need to have a vast range of sources of inspiration, and not only musical ones. The more diverse your interests are the wider is your creative palette.

While single minded focus is not a bad thing in the creative line of work, nevertheless it can lead to a sort of “creativity drought”, you know what I mean :).

Creativity block

How many times you opened up your empty arranging window in your DAW with an intention to write a hit song and found just zero ideas in your mind, and asked yourself what to do with that?  Well, looks like no Muse knocking at your door, right?

Creativity Block | Article In Professional Blog | From Iris YuvelirRemember, finding yourself stuck with no creative idea is a common thing for creative people, I call it “creative block”, everybody knows it. But the more you try to deliberately, by force push through this creative block the less you like the results - every piece of melody, every beat or lyric you make sounds generic at best.
I’ve come to a conclusion that one of the reasons why creative blocks happen is because we’re too obsessed with the intention to write a hit; we put ourselves under an unreasonable pressure of creation only an extraordinary hit. If you experience this situation now - my congratulations, your perfectionism stifled your creative flow!
Here are the two practical steps to follow in order to get rid of creativity block:
1.The first step to remedy this issue is to acknowledge that you are in the creative block because of your perfectionism.
2. Second step is just giving yourself a permission to create the worst piece of music ever. Let the bad, mediocre, mundane, “too much on the nose” songs flow out of you like a mudflow after a hurricane. Let it all out of your system. This approach will help to ease up the stress your subconsciousness is experiencing every time you begin to write music.

IMPORTANT: never delete these "masterpieces" from your files. Eventually you will be surprised to see that among these “bad songs” there are actually real gems.
